Sipadan Island, the only oceanic volcanic atoll in Malaysia, is home to some seriously diverse marine life. Even though Jacques Cousteau called it "an untouched piece of art," diving into this underwater wonderland takes some planning and know-how. This trip includes all the gear and equipment you need, the permit fee, two dives at different Sipadan sites, and one dive at another island, making it a total of 3 dives. It talks about a bunch of reasons why joining professional diving tours is a smart move when you're in Sipadan.

The permit is granted, but there are some strict rules. Each tour operator can only take a limited number of people each day, so they have a set number of spots. The tour will be adjusted based on the available quota once you confirm. You’ll need at least an open water certificate in advance, and keep in mind that date changes or cancellations aren’t allowed. War equals permits. No tour, no dive. They're fighting over the permit. Just pay, and we’ll handle everything else.

Starting location:

We’ll meet at 8 a.m, but that might change depending on the weather and other stuff. The dive centre crew gives you a quick rundown: they check your permits, load up the gear and remind you need your Advanced Open Water certification. As the sky turns a vibrant tangerine, you hop onto a speedboat, holding onto your waterproof bag packed with reef-safe sunscreen (gotta protect those Sipadan corals!). The engine starts up—time for some fun!

Ready to paradise

The 45-minute boat ride to Sipadan is quite the adventure. Flying fish zip through the golden waves made by the morning light. So, dive guides share some cool tales about spotting hammerheads and those wild "turtle tornadoes," while the outline of Sipadan pops up, a jungle-covered peak from an old volcano that drops 600 meters into the Celebes Sea. At the Sabah Parks checkpoint, guards check permits, reminding everyone how seriously the island is protected. You've got tanks that can handle some serious currents, and the crew teams up with their buddies. Everything's ready to go.

Sipadan dive

Diving back into that blue water feels like jumping into a sea of sapphires. As you slide down a wall with coral teeth, the current tugs at you like an exciting rollercoaster ride. Pure excitement. Current pulls you in like a river beneath the surface. Safety stops are also a fun time, you can catch green turtles munching on sponges or other cool marine life since it’s all out in the wild. dive in and check out the amazing depths of the oceans. Time flies, an hour feels like just a blink

Second sipadan dive

Another dive into an otherworldly spot filled with massive sea fans and staghorn corals, and it’s like paradise down there. Neon nudibranchs in electric blue and blazing orange hang out on overhangs. A bumphead parrotfish, about the size of a fridge, munches on coral with its beak-like teeth, making clicks that echo in the calm water. Jackfish schools are swirling together, while whitetip reef sharks chill out in the sandy spots. Dive marshals are keeping an eye from above, ensuring that no fins mess with the reef, staying buoyant is super important here. This dive is like a crash course in biodiversity.

Lunch

Climbing back into the boat, heart racing, you get a quick rundown. On Sipadan's quiet beach (no bathrooms here, just embrace the wild), you kick off and enjoy a meal on the soft, white sand. Hawksbill turtles pop up near the shore, their shells glimmering like shiny jade. Frigatebirds are circling up above. This is Jacques Cousteau's "untouched piece of art," a chill spot where nature sets the vibe. All itineraries could change depending on safety rules, government requests, what's happening in the world, and what the trip operator prefers.

Third dive

After a quick 20-minute boat ride to Kapalai Island, you dive right into some awesome muck diving. Flamboyant cuttlefish flash colours like a trippy rainbow show. A blue-ringed octopus, about the size of your thumb, scurries across the sand, both venomous and stunning. Frogfish look like old sponges, and ghost pipefish chill out with the seagrass. Check out the "Pikachu" nudibranchs and say hi to "Elvis," the giant moray eel that hangs out at Kapalai. It’s a chill, laid-back dive with every rock hides something cool.

Finish at:

As the boat glides over to Mabul, the sun dips down into the Celebes Sea, time to sharing stories with divers, everyone’s connected by the magic of Sipadan. “Barracudas!” Hey, turtles! That octopus, huh? No one lost. Once we're back at the jetty, we rinse off the gear and sign the logs, end of adventure.
