Do I need a visa to visit Turpan?
Yes! Traveling to Xinjiang requires a valid Chinese visa and your original passport but no special visa is needed. Once step into mainland China, Turpan really rolls out the welcome mat for foreign travellers. You can wander around the grape valleys, explore the ancient ruins, and take in breathtaking views of the Flaming Mountains without having to worry about any special local border permits (unlike some of the more off-the-beaten-path areas of Xinjiang).
What is the best time to visit Turpan?
Turpan is a great spot to go out in the spring (March-May) and autumn (September-October). That’s when the weather is just right for wandering through the desert scenery, vineyards and cool historical sites. Summers can get super hot, while winters are chillier and way less packed.
How do I get around Turpan?
Travellers often hop on bikes for quick trips, while buses or taxis are the go-to for getting to the big sights. Buses link up all the hot spots for those travelling on a budget. For the intent of visiting neighbouring attractions such as Jiaohe Ancient City, uighur village and the Flaming Mountains, a significant number of travellers prefer to participate in organised day trips.
How to stay safe?
The town has a remarkably low rates of violent street crime, such as robbery and pickpocketing, which are virtually nonexistent. This is primarily due to the police and security presence, which is heavily monitored. The biggest obstacles are the intense heat and navigating official or linguistic regulations rather than worrying about the crime.Dealing with intense heat and navigating the arid terrain, with a summertime readiness of 45 degrees Celsius, are your top priorities. and refrain from discussing delicate subjects related to the government and minorities, as this is not advised. However, from a tourist perspective, it is a worthwhile trip, provided that you always carry a passport because people of different skin tones and nationalities may be subject to a random check.

The largest and oldest urban ruins in the world. It is not built in the same way as its Greek and Roman counterpart, but it has a similar atmosphere. We stopped by as a last stop for sightseeing in Gouban where we chartered a car.

When we visited this place there are 6 caves that is open to the public. The murals on some of the caves are still there. Majority of this are scratched or deface. Statues are stolen. However, whatever remains, you are still see the colours and shapes of the figurines.
