Semporna: Half-Day Mangrove Cruise, Fireflies & Dinner

A small van picks you up right from the hotel lobby and takes you on a ride away from the busy centre of Semporna town, where your experience starts. The actual trip takes between forty-five and an hour. Savour the colourful alleyways that lead into quaint towns surrounded by coconut trees before entering the verdant embrace of the mangrove habitat.

Experience the warm hospitality of a traditional Malaysian "Hi-Tea" upon arrival at Mangrove River Base Camp. Savour regional specialities and sip sweet, aromatic tea while instructor gives a succinct but intriguing overview of the distinctive ecology you're going to discover.

Hop on a sturdy, open-sided boat. As the motor starts up, the boat smoothly pulls away from the dock and into a chill world of twisted roots and flickering light. Explore out some animals including crocodiles, eagles, and monkeys, depending on lucks. The instructor casually points to the canopy while cruising through the canals, clearly in tune with the local vibes and customs. The buzzing of insects, the splashing of fish, and the rustling of plants get louder as the boat glides into a narrower canal. Admire out the sunset and spot where the river meets the ocean or you have a wide view. The mangroves turn into this cool black lace, and the sky lights up, throwing some fiery reflections on the chill water, making for a really relaxing vibe.

Head back to the Base Camp after sunset, a dinner awaits. Depending on the tour operator and number of travellers, dig into a buffet BBQ dinner with seafood or local foods, enjoy some fun singing to share stories with fellow travellers, and soak in the chill vibe of the riverside camp as the sun starts to go down.

Hop back on the boat and get ready for nighttime magic,  glide over the dark water, illuminated by the guide's soft spotlight. The fireflies zoom around, looking like tiny twinkling stars on a glowing Christmas tree creating an unforgettable sight in nature. please keep in mind catching an image of fireflies is pretty wild, but it’s not something can count on every time.
